The Herman and Walter Samuelson Foundation

It’s always good to see the legacy of The Samuelson Family doing good for the community. Herman and Walter Samuelson were my grandfather’s first cousins. My father just attended the ground breaking of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore’s $29.5 million expansion of its Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital.

Sinai Hospital of Baltimore will break ground today for a $29.5 million expansion of its Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital.

A two-story wing and related upgrades were designed to help Sinai improve the range of services it provides for patients from birth to age 18.

When complete in March 2012, the facility will feature a larger children’s diagnostic center and all-private inpatient rooms with space for parents to sleep overnight. Sinai’s pediatric intensive care unit will be renovated, and a larger pediatric oncology clinic will be built.

The children’s hospital expansion is the latest in a series of improvements that Sinai has made in recent years to its Northwest Baltimore campus, along with a new south patient tower and atrium.

The project is driven by a need for more space and a desire to enhance the quality and efficiency of care for infants, children and adolescents.

“We’re going to be able to significantly improve our ability to serve kids and their families because we are going to be offering private rooms for everyone, to give not only a richer, safer environment for patients but also to give more flexibility in staffing and in providing the array of services that children need,” said Warren Green, chief executive officer of LifeBridge Health, Sinai’s corporate parent. “A big part of what we’re trying to do with this new hospital is provide an environment that puts its arms around the entire family.”

Beginning around 2003, “the number of admissions that we could accommodate per year capped, because we really had no more room,” said Joseph Wiley, chairman of the children’s hospital. “There are many weekday nights … in which we were maxed out. We had patients in the emergency room waiting for patients to be discharged, sometimes as late as 11 o’clock at night, sometimes as early as 5 or 6 in the morning.”

The expansion, designed by Hord Coplan Macht of Baltimore, also will enable Sinai to keep up with the latest technological advances in pediatric care, said Sharon Rossi, director of patient care for women’s and children’s services.

“Technology changes, and with that the demands change,” she said. “So to stay cutting-edge, we want to have the very best in technology.”

Administrators say Sinai has the capacity to treat 2,635 children a year as inpatients and 30,600 children a year as outpatients. They project that the expansion will give Sinai the ability to admit 135 more pediatric inpatients each year, an increase of more than 5 percent, and treat an additional 600 pediatric outpatients each year, an increase of 2 percent.

In addition, they say, creating all private rooms for patients will enable parents to be with their children throughout their hospital stays. Now, Sinai’s children’s hospital has 22 inpatient beds, but only 10 of them are in private rooms.

The project is being financed by a combination of philanthropic contributions, state and federal funding and hospital funds. To date, Sinai has raised more than $17 million to build the project, including a lead gift of $4 million to name the children’s hospital after the late Samuelson brothers, who were active in Baltimore’s real estate industry.

The project’s design is based on a philosophy of “family-centered care,” which means the patient’s family takes part along with the physician in the diagnosis, treatment and care of the child.

“Family-centered care has always been integral to the children’s hospital at Sinai,” Rossi said. “We were one of the first hospitals in the nation to allow parents to sleep at the bedside” in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The way Sinai approaches pediatric care, “you’re not just treating the patients,” said Laura Cohen, coordinator of child life services. “You’re treating the whole family. It’s a team.”

So that’s the leacy that they leave and I love to see it going to a great cause! We hope to continue to support good causes and keeping the Samuelson name alive.

Site PreviewWe are so excited here at Samuelson’s to announce the launch of our new updated website, with a new URL, BaltimoreDiamonds.com.  I want to thank our team for a job well done.  David and Garth did a great job!  You’ll notice a new homepage, history page, diamond specials link,  and more.  We have a little more to do (don’t we always?) but overall it’s there and we’re ready to rock!  I want to give a special shout out to the crew at Emagine Web Consulting for hookin up the slides for us.  The rest was done IN HOUSE and I’m very proud of the Samuelson’s Diamonds team for a job well done!  Please look around and contact us with any comments or suggestions.  This site is for you, our great customers and friends, so enjoy!

JUNE 3, 2009: Samuelson’s Diamonds, Baltimore’s downtown diamond destination, was the subject of Urban Discoveries Blog’s report entitled ‘Development Spotlight: 400 West Baltimore’:

Samuelson’s Diamonds Downtown … a Baltimore institution for almost ninety years, has been very busy lately. In addition to relocating and renovating its own store, the family-owned company has invested in several properties on the 400 block of West Baltimore Street …

Ron Samuelson, the scion of the diamond dynasty, promises a PNC Bank, a Five Guys, and a Panera. Reputed to be somewhat excitable, but endearing, Mr. Samuelson also promises to play the video of your favorite song when you come visit the new store, which the family hopes to open later this year.

Samuelson’s Diamonds maintains its commitment to the redevelopment and reinvigorating of the downtown business district.

May 28, 2009 – Samuelson’s Diamonds, the premier downtown diamond destination in Baltimore, Maryland was featured yesterday in The Baltimore Daily Record (May 27 2009:)

The family-run business, anchored by a retail diamond store at the corner of West Baltimore and North Paca streets, is teaming up with Baltimore County developer David S. Brown Enterprises and Washington-based firm A&R Development to return a key downtown Baltimore block between the University of Maryland and the central business district to its former glory as a “thriving downtown area.”

“People used to get on a bus and come downtown and went shopping at Stewarts’s or Hutzler’s,” said Steven Samuelson, who at 67 still runs the shop with his son Ron, who is 36. “The neighborhood had become something we knew we had to do something about, or else somebody else would.”

Samuelson’s Diamonds maintains its commitment to rebuilding and reinvigorating city life and business on the West Side of Baltimore.

Samuelson’s Tapped for Social Media Expertise in Baltimore Business Journal

May 21, 2009 – Samuelson’s Diamonds, the downtown diamond destination in Baltimore was tapped today by the Baltimore Business Journal for expertise in internet social media. Rachel Bernstein writes:

Ron Samuelson, CEO of Samuelson’s Diamonds in Baltimore, uses Twitter – a communication service emblazoned with a  bird logo – to spur business and attributes much of his success of the year-old account to the service.

Samuelson also has used Facebook and personal blogging to reach customers who would otherwise see him as just a guy sitting behind a counter, pandering diamonds.

Samuelson’s shop of 10 employees was starting in 1922, far from the days of tweets and Facebook fan pages.

“The crowd I do business with now are very tech-savvy, so we have a full service Web site too, where we drive all our traffic,” Samuelson said.

Samuelson’s Diamonds maintains its commitment to cutting edge communications technology for business contacts and customers.

New Store Update

Haven’t heard from us much in the last month – but it’s not all for naught. We’re almost ready to move into our new digs!

Check out this, shall we say, exclusive footage:

Also, we’ve got some photos, showing the process of going from ‘guts’ to ‘glory’ (literally.)

We’ll be right across the street, brand new place, all kinds of goodies – and a web site redesign. I mention this because it will be more than a simple change of colors and fonts. That’s a understatement. Look for it.

So much bad news these days! It’s always tempting to throw in some news of the latest figures or forecasts, but we’ve got other things to think about:


What’s this, you ask? It doesn’t look like much… But it will soon be our new store.

In other news, we’ve also started putting new sale diamonds on our twitter feed as they arrive (you’re not going to find deals like these at Blue Nile or any mall store) so listen in. If you’re a twitter user, give us a holler, and we’ll holler back at you.

Also: Don’t forget Valentine’s Day, guys & gals (the 14th is a Saturday this year.) More on that, later.

Jewelry On The Web… Made Easy?

Recently, Rapaport reported some figures about Valentine’s day campaigns. Lots of bucks are being spent on V-day campaigns, and no doubt, like the Dog House ad, it’s a full media experience. Although:

But for the average Joe — who never caught these announcements — it is more likely that he’ll simply type ”diamond ring” into Google to begin the shopping process. In a rather brief observation of the results of such a search, there turns out to be plenty of room for your brand to capture his attention.

Usually when I look for things it is by using the search box. Back in the day, you had to first type in ‘www.google.com’ or ‘www.yahoo.com’ before beginning the search process; now there’s a little box at the top corner of every browser. Heck, Firefox will even interpret an improperly typed address as a google (or other) search.

In light of this, everyone is searching for a ‘total solution’ – everyone wants to be at the top of ‘diamond ring’ search results. Mentions on cnn.com, a snazzy, sparkly new web site that seamlessly integrates with the retail experience. One of the big problems with the internet is that instead of having one main street in each city with thousands of people, you have one main street total with millions of people. Tough for the smaller offering.

It’s also interesting to see the solutions offered by various firms, most have not even begun to touch on the notion of the things that really matter – the relationships with customers – and stick mostly to showcasing easy ways to make technology work for you.

Only recently have we begun to see a focus on social networking, with the explosion of the use of facebook (for one) but its presence in the retail world has been minimal. The news organizations have really taken to it – I suppose in part because in the recent climate for newspapers (even before the recession) anything FREE looks mighty nice. Through this the retail world has been touched, for example, by Baltimore Restaurant Week.

But nobody has a great solution. It is important to remember that most things that are ‘simple’ are either deceptive or only the beginning of the actual solution. My work as a programmer has taught me this. And social media is new – at least in this incarnation – the noise in the data is great and nobody is sure where the money is yet.

Probably? We all do what we did that worked before, but now online.

And anyway, we shouldn’t become enthralled by novelty; for one, people still have mailboxes. It will be interesting to see how effective mailings are when all of the spammers have switched to twitter and blog comments. (We see you guys, and so does akismet!) Heck, I love it when I get a letter. Even if stamps are what, 43 cents?

You’re wondering: what happened to the video we promised! On review, we decided to something bigger with it. (That’s biz-speak for please wait… :)

Happy MLK Day

Interesting that it is the day before the inauguration; a fact which had little significance until now.

It was pretty jammed up here in Baltimore on Saturday, what with the visit of the new President-Elect, Barack Obama. I wasn’t there (since I had other things I needed to do that day, and believe me, if you were in the city you weren’t going anywhere!) but I heard there was partying.

We’re all a little busted up about the Ravens losing, but at least the Cardinals won. Otherwise, it would just be Pennsylvania playing itself in the Super Bowl. It would be years before our neighbors would cease saying things to all of the rest of us like, “When you learn how to play football, come visit us!” Congenial… yet insulting.

Soon we’ll post some videos and other content relating to recent events, and future ventures. (Sufficiently vague, right?) Stay tuned! Or, clicked – or whatever you do to keep checking back.
