Facebook Groups for Business Collaboration

Facebook Groups can be much like Google Groups

This is David here. I’m Ron’s brother-in-law, married to his sister, Ellyn. I’ve been here at Samuelson’s Diamonds for about six years and I handle lots of the finance and marketing related issues for the company.

We’ve been talking about how video needs to be a more active element of our marketing efforts and we sat down recently with a creative video production group to put together some concepts for Samuelson’s Diamonds. As we were wrapping up our meeting – keep an eye out for some great videos next month – we brought up the idea of collaboration.

How would we effectively share our ideas with one another? I don’t know about you, but I tend to get ideas at all kinds of weird hours and in some pretty strange places. Instead of trying to keep an email chain going indefinitely and having to search Gmail or Outlook for the one email that someone forgot to “reply all” to and is now MIA, we decided to use Facebook as our tool of choice. Although Google Wave is exactly structured for this type of cooperative work, Facebook is a much better option from the standpoint of familiarity. We all know how to update, share, join, invite, etc. Nobody has to be educated or trained. We simply set up a private group, invite the people involved and start adding thoughts, content, comments and more.

Just when you thought Facebook was exclusively a place for social networking and viral marketing, turns out it can also be used for doing actual work!

National Jeweler Asks Ron Samuelson ‘How to Make Social Networking Work for You’

SEPTEMBER 4 2009: Ron Samuelson, CEO of Samuelson’s Diamonds, Baltimore’s downtown diamond destination, was interviewed by the National Jeweler magazine about effective use of online social media:

The point of social networking, says Samuelson, as well as marketing experts who study the subject, isn’t necessarily to generate business directly, but to establish a dialogue with consumers in the virtual world.

It is not a place to advertise but, rather, to engage so that if consumers do visit a store that has a Facebook page or followers on Twitter, they feel like they already have a relationship with the owner.

“That main thing and the most important thing about Facebook and Twitter and all these things is that your customers see you as a real person,” Samuelson says. “Even though you’re the CEO of a jewelry store, you’re not just the guy behind the counter. I think that it is really important today, and customers see that from you. This way, people feel like they know you.”

Ron Samuelson is an active participant in many online communities, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace, and maintains his own blog, Ramble On Ron. He has been featured in a number of videos which are available through YouTube.

Wall Street Journal Mentions Ron Samuelson

Today, December 24th:

Ron Samuelson, 36, is still smarting after being unfriended a month ago. The chief executive of jewelry retailer Samuelson’s Diamonds Inc. in Baltimore, Md., tried to view the profile of one of his Facebook friends — only to find his access was limited because they weren’t friends anymore.

Insulted, Mr. Samuelson wondered if his supposed friend, also a jeweler, feared his profile would give away competitive information, or if he had done it by accident.

It wasn’t long before the missing friend resurfaced, this time requesting to join a private Facebook group Mr. Samuelson had created for jewelers to network with each other. Still hurt, Mr. Samuelson says he hesitated before approving his request, but ultimately “chose to take the high road.” He says he would never get in the habit of unfriending people himself. “Diplomatically, it’s probably not the right thing to do,” says Mr. Samuelson, who has 466 friends on Facebook.

Mr. Samuelson declined to name the fellow jeweler. “I don’t want to burn any bridges,” he says. “He may be a future business contact.”

The reporter had run across one of Ron’s blog posts awhile back, “Unfriended on Facebook: Compliment or Diss?” Guess it does pay to just… blog. Who knew!
